Diandra is a journalist covering the NFL and NHL.
While working in the industry, she realized there was a vital part of the audience that was being ignored when it came to sports coverage.
WOMEN.
In a recent study done by NYU's Preston Robert Tisch Institute of Global Sport, data showed that women account for 37% - 45% of the total fan market for North American Professional Leagues (NFL, NHL, NBA, MLB, MLS & NASCAR). In this study, women and girls reported that the majority of their sports news came from online content and social media platforms. The same report concluded that women spend around 80% of all sports apparel dollars.
Even with those numbers, The Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport (TIDES) found that 83.3% of Sports Editors, 85.6% of Sports Reporters and 82.2% of Sports Columnists were men.
Rarely are female sports fans considered when sports content is being produced. The goal of In Total Sports is to provide coverage in FULL. We’ll cover what happens in the game without leaving behind the stories that happen off the field. In addition, we will always include the accomplishments of women athletes and coaches. Then we’ll get creative in our storytelling. Thanks for following along!
